Pocket bikes - Good fun or money thrown?

A 50cc pocket bike is a small, lightweight motorcycle designed for riders looking for a fun, compact, and affordable way to enjoy motorcycling. These bikes are typically powered by a 50cc engine, which makes them ideal for beginners, young riders, or those who simply want something smaller and more maneuverable than a full-sized motorcycle.

A 50cc engine is usually a small two-stroke, which offers just enough power for zipping around. While not as fast as larger bikes, a 50cc engine can reach speeds between 30-50 mph (48-80 km/h), depending on the specific model and its setup. Pocket bikes are famously small and lightweight. A typical 50cc pocket bike weighs around 40-70 pounds (18-32 kg) and is about 3-4 feet long. Their lower power output and ease of handling make them great for developing basic riding skills.

Their small size also makes them well-suited for use on smaller tracks, in parking lots, or on private land. These bikes are designed to be easy to operate, even for beginners. Most 50cc pocket bikes have simple throttle controls, so riders don’t need to worry about shifting gears. The lightweight nature of the bike also makes it easier to handle and balance, which is perfect for someone just starting to learn the ropes of motorcycling.

Many riders use 50cc pocket bikes for racing on small tracks or go-kart circuits. These bikes are small enough to maneuver easily on tight courses, and their speed provides a competitive edge in such environments. Pocket bike racing has become a popular hobby, with numerous events held for riders of all levels. This topic is something we may explore further later on, so stay tuned.

A major selling point of 50cc pocket bikes is the cost. They are generally much more affordable than larger motorcycles, both in terms of purchase price and maintenance. Prices can vary based on the brand and model, but you can typically find a good 50cc pocket bike for anywhere between $300 and $1,000.

50cc pocket bikes are a fantastic way to experience the thrill of motorcycling in a smaller, more manageable package.  While not suited for highway use or long trips, a 50cc pocket bike can still provide a thrilling and enjoyable ride, especially on private tracks or backroads.

If you’re considering a pocket bike, it’s important to factor in local regulations, safety gear, and where you’ll be riding.

Stay safe guys.
